Best Natural Remedies for Sinus Headaches

Sinus headaches are actually the result of a sinus infection, and so the underlying infection must be treated to remedy the headache. Sinus infections can be chronic causing few symptoms until an acute episode debilitates, but all natural relief can be found, and in some instances cure the chronic sufferers.

Causes: Sometimes if a cause can be eliminated it will prevent recurrences. Some common causes of sinusitis are

  • dental infections
  • smoking/airborne irritants or allergies
  • food allergies

Remedies

Acupuncture: Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) ranks number one on my list of treatments. My Dad suffered with chronic sinus infections and headaches, and tried many treatments only to be disappointed with the results, until someone suggested he try an Acupuncturist. Along with the acupuncture, the doctor prescribed an external remedy called White Flower(carried by most health food stores and TCM practitioners and shops) that Dad applied anywhere he felt pressure and/or pain. As a side note I love White Flower for my migraines. To find an acupuncturist in your area visit http://www.acufinder.com/

Nutritional Changes: find out if you have any food allergies. This can be done by visiting an allergy consultant or simply by an elimination diet. You can also supplement with extra vitamins such as vitamin C and zinc to boost immunity.

Herbal Remedies: herbs that boost the immune system such as Echinacea, Goldenseal, or Berberis vulgaris and herbs traditionally used to treat headaches like feverfew, willow bark, devil's claw and chinese scullcap. There are many to choose from, it is best to meet with a qualified practitioner to help you decide which will be best for you and to make sure you don't have any contraindications to any of the herbs. This will also save you a lot of money in the long run as you won't waste money trying to find a remedy that works for you. The American Herbalists Guild has a listing of qualified herbalists http://americanherbalistsguild.com/fundamentals

Aromatherapy: steam inhalations are excellent for promoting sinus drainage and will repair damaged sinus tissue(damaged tissue is often the cause of recurrent infections). Essential oils that may be added are peppermint, thyme, or tea tree oil. A certified aromatherapist can help you with a customized blend that can also be used in your bath.

External Treatments: A humidifier will keep the nasal passages from drying out and will promote healing of the membranes. Inhaling fresh horseradish will increase mucus flow.

There are things you can do for sinus headaches and sinus pressure relief. I try to find natural relief first. I'll try over the counter medications ONLY as a last resort. One thing that really helps me is using an aromatherapy eye pillow. It’s great for treating sinus congestion and sinus pressure, stress and anxiety issues as well as insomnia and sleep disorders. What I have to found to work best for me is an eye pillow, right out of the freezer. I use a peppermint scented one because it opens up my sinuses and that helps me to breathe a lot better and helps any sinus or tension related headaches. The cold flax seed inside the eye pillow surrounds my eyes and temples which helps to reduce swelling in the sinus cavities and around the eyes. The weight of the flax seed applies just enough acupressure to soothe and relax my facial muscles. The eye pillow also block out all light, when the pain is so bad it just makes you squint you eyes. I searched online and found several sites that had them. The one I decided to go with was A Touch Of Satin. I liked them because their ingredients were organic, and that was very important to me. They had an unbelievably large selection of patterns and I like the feel of satin on my skin. They had a page on their site that talked about the benefits of their aromatherapy scents. They also had lavender and that is suppose to be good for migraines. It was very interesting. Their site is http://www.atouchofsatin.com if you want to read what they have to say.I just read that acupuncture is very helpful in treating sinus issues as well and interestingly enough, you talk about it in your article. I hope this helps you. Good luck!

I took your advice and I started using Goldenseal about two months ago.

I followed the recommendation of the post above from sunnydays13 and I went to A Touch Of Satin and purchased a peppermint eye pillow. I must say that it has really helped with my sinus congestion and the sinus headaches. I use it at night if I can't get to sleep because my head is so clogged up. I use it in the morning when I wake up with sinus pain in my temples and forehead and puffiness and pressure in my eyes and sinus cavities .

Thanks for the great recommendations!

Got a cold from my grandchild and it developed into a sinus infection. Woke up 4 mornings in a row with a pressure headache and yellow discharge. It was so bad I had to leave work early yesterday.

I looked up natural remedies (hate taking antibiotics)and found some people swear by apple cider vinegar.

Wow! I have never seen anything work this well. Simply amazing.

I used 1 tbsp of raw, unfiltered, unpasteurized, apple cider vinegar with "mother" in a glass of water every couple of hours.

It is now 15 hours in and the headache is gone, I can breathe and my cold symptoms are disappearing.

I had to share this with someone.
